The future of 3D concrete printing
3D concrete printing is evolving at lightning speed. What was once experimental is now becoming a fully-fledged construction method.
Based on hands-on experience and extensive testing, we see clear trends that will shape the sector in the years to come.
Key pillars of 3D concrete printing:
1. Print materials: from sustainable to circular
We expect a strong evolution in print materials in the coming years.
The ultimate ambition: to print entirely with sustainable or recycled materials – ideally using residual streams from the construction site itself, recycling on-site and printing immediately. That is the future, although in practice we’re not quite there yet.
Possible sustainable options already in development include:
- Mixes with reduced Portland cement (current blends already contain less)
- Lime-based materials
- Materials that store CO₂
- Degradable materials with the same strength as traditional concrete mixes
Given the current compositions, “stone printing” is often a better term than concrete printing – time will tell what we end up calling it.
2. Affordable printers tailored to every project
3D printing is gradually becoming accessible to almost every construction company.
This goes together with:
- Simpler printing processes
- Growing knowledge within teams
- A democratization of printer costs
Printers tailored to objectives, experience, and company size deliver:
- Lower production costs
- Higher ROI
- A place for 3D printing in both small and large construction and manufacturing companies
3. Designing with “what after” in mind
Sustainable thinking starts with design. What happens to printed elements after their use?
- When houses are printed in a single piece, reuse is often limited.
- The market is therefore evolving towards modular elements that can be given a second life.
The great design freedom of 3D printing can sometimes make reuse more challenging, but by taking this into account in the design phase, more circular solutions can be created.
4. Aesthetics and integrated functions as the new standard
Quality remains essential, but aesthetics are becoming increasingly important.
Expect more projects with:
- Consistent print quality
- Colors in the printing process
- Patterns and textures
- Personal accents and details
Additionally, functions will also be integrated into the printing process, such as insulation in the material, cutouts for pipes, and other construction technical provisions. This can lead to less post-processing and a more efficient construction process.
Aesthetics and functionality are thus combined into one smart solution.
5. User-friendly and portable printers
The new generation of printers is:
- Quick to start
- Easy to operate
- Quick to clean and dismantle
- Easy to move, without heavy equipment or cranes
That makes 3D printing more efficient and accessible for different users and locations.
6. On-site printing and hybrid printing
Today, printing is usually done in climate-controlled spaces – an expensive additional investment that reduces profitability.
We expect the reverse movement: printers that adapt to the conditions on-site.
The future will be hybrid printing:
- On-site where it is technically and economically feasible, with benefits such as reduced heavy transport and direct construction where the end product is needed
- In the factory when control, precision, or circumstances require it
Thus, a flexible approach is created that combines the best of both worlds.
